Meet Ellen
Ellen Levitt, a Licensed Midwife (CA License #7), brings over 35 years of dedicated experience to family health, offering compassionate prenatal, birth, and postpartum care.
Since beginning her journey in 1987, Ellen has attended more than 2,500 births. She is deeply committed to informed choice, empowering families to make decisions that align with their values. With a belief that healthcare is a fundamental human right, Ellen proudly serves families of all backgrounds.
Her midwifery training began through a homebirth apprenticeship in California, complemented by clinical experience in a hospital in Kingston, Jamaica, as well as in birth centers in Austin, Texas, and Hollywood, Florida. Before becoming a midwife, Ellen worked as an EMT in San Francisco. Teaching and mentoring apprentices has been central to her practice, allowing her to pass on the midwifery model of care to the next generation of practitioners.
Ellen has been an active voice in the midwifery community, serving as a regional representative on the board of the California Association of Midwives and on the California Licensing Committee. She also co-founded the Bay Area Homebirth Collective, reflecting her passion for sustaining a strong homebirth community. Her dedication to midwifery is evident in the admiration and gratitude of the families she serves.
When not attending to her clients, Ellen enjoys playing pickleball, partner dancing, juggling, and spending quality time with her family and friends.
“During the early days of postpartum, I was fortunate to have Ellen visit me at home. I was learning to nurse and feeling a little overwhelmed and unsure of all the different options. Ellen gently guided me through different breastfeeding positions and shared tips that made such a difference for me and my baby. But what truly stood out was how they addressed my fears around looking at my own sutures. Their calm, reassuring presence gave me the confidence to feel more at ease in my body’s healing process.
Ellen also educated me on the importance of rest during recovery, providing tangible, anatomy-based reasons that helped me understand how critical it was for my body to heal properly. Their calm and comforting delivery made it easier to embrace rest without guilt, something I hadn’t fully appreciated before.
Ellen’s impact was so profound that I knew, without a doubt, that the next time I became pregnant, I would want them by my side again during postpartum. Their support was invaluable, and I can’t recommend them highly enough.”
